UP # 844 Cheyenne to Rawlins, WY May 3, 2007 Union Pacific Railroad's historic steam locomotive, No. 844, will travel more than 3000 miles from its base in Wyoming on a 29-day, four-state tour to the Pacific Northwest, to celebrate the railroad's history and heritage. The "Pacific Northwest Portland Rose Heritage Tour" will begin on May 3 when No. 844 leaves Cheyenne, Wyo., and travels to Rock Springs, Wyo. The locomotive will make overnight stops and be on display in:Rock Springs, Wyo. Pocatello, Boise, Nampa and Montpelier, Idaho La Grande, Hinkle, The Dalles, Portland, Ore. Tacoma, Wash. See the Nilgiri Mountain Steam Railway, in Tamil Nadu, India. The Journey ends at Coonoor - 28km, 5616ft - main intermediate station on the line to Comatore from Ooty. I chased it from Oakland to Stockton, California, with a memorable and historical meet at Hearst with Southen Pacific 4-6-2 #2472 and Robert Dollar Tank Engine #3. 4014 on display at the LA county fairgrounds in Pomona, CA. According to several of the men responsible for the preservation of this engine & the others, they were planning on doing some cosmetic work on 14; new paint, & new boiler jacketing to get it ready for September when the LA fair would take place. They told me that restoring it to operating condition would be next to impossible due to the outrageously high costs (restoration, maintainence, fuel, insurance, getting a crew to operate it, etc.) and even when it was running during the 1940's and '50s that it was extremely hard on the tracks and cost UP some extra track maintenance.
