This short, silent film captures one of Britain's minor little railways: the Leek and Manifold Light Railway on the Staffordshire Moorlands. The railway opened in 1907, linking the villages of Waterhouses and Hulme End, and was built mainly for agricultural traffic, with a passenger service being a secondary consideration. Its route went through beautiful countryside in Staffordshire, and it is unfortunate that the intertitles state it as being shot in Derbyshire! In 1934 the entire line was closed by the North Staffordshire Railway. There is little in the way of recorded film material of this quaint little train, so this gem gives an invaluable insight into the railway. (Stuart Smith,...

My 6th visit to the Paignton & Dartmouth Steam Railway, 'The Nations Holiday Line' on Wednesday 13th August 2008. Now I know a hell of a lot of enthusiasts are against the P&DSR, saying that they don't keep locomotives in original liveries along with naming them, using coloured lights etc, but I think the P&DSR GWR liveries are better than the GWR real ones, come on, your saying 'Lydham Manor' looks rubbish?, and do the signals really matter? So if you hate it so much why do they keep going there? - because you know its one of the best lines in the country. The views are superb of Torbay, the sea and of the River Dart. I can understand naming locomotives because holiday-makers...

Ride on the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway. Going from Llanfair Caereinion to Welshpool on a Sierra Leone Railways engine and matching coaches. Opened in 1903 to link the market town of Welshpool to the rural community of Llanfair Caereinion, this 2 foot 6 inch narrow gauge steam railway now provides a tourist service for all the family and a welcome change from the rush of every day life. Built as a Light Railway to avoid some of the costs of railway construction, the narrow gauge allows for tight curves and steep gradients, enabling the line to follow the contours of the countryside. All of our trains are steam hauled, either by one of our unique original locomotives or one from...

Locomotive arrivals and departures are plentiful at Colombo Fort railway station between the 13th and 15th of December 2009. Plenty of clag and thrash with many classes of diesel locomotive represented. The station staff, railway police, soldiers and most of all the train crews were the most friendly I ever encountered and for that I hope they accept my deepest thanks... this is in a country still on high alert after the war yet they still found it possible to accomodate my enthusiasm for their railways, its a shame we can't be as outgoing here in the UK at times towards our enthusiasts. Sri Lankan Railways (SLR) has maintained a great service through difficult times and whilst not the high...

A collection of clips depicting former United States Army Transportation Corps S100 Class 0-6-0T locomotives, better known in the UK as the Southern Railway "USA Class". Traversing the roadway Southampton Docks, 1962. Shunting at Southampton Docks, 1962. No.30072 at Guildford Shed c1963. No.30064 at Southampton Central on a railtour, 25/03/1967. No.30064 on the Fawley Branch during the same tour, 25/03/1967. The Southern Railway purchased 15 of these locomotives (which had hardly been used and were lying around awaiting disposal) after the Second World War for use at Southampton Docks where their short wheelbase and ample power were a great advantage. Fourteen entered traffic, one being...

A recreation of an experiment revealing the nature of the Doppler shift, filmed for bbc2's Horizon programme in 1978. Kent & East Sussex Railway A1X Terrier 0-6-0T No.10 'Sutton' is seen hurtling between Rolvenden and Wittersham with an unusual train consisting of a drop-sided wagon and brake van. Oh, and a sextet of Salvation Army trumpeters all playing middle C. What would the Health and Safety wallahs would make of this today? They're not even wearing hi-viz waistcoats! Historical note: It was Dutch chemist and meteorologist CHD Buys Ballot who tested the Doppler effect for sound waves by using a group of musicians playing a calibrated note on a train on the Utrecht-Amsterdam line in...
